Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Friday, 16 April 1982, at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The fourteen-page programme identifies university officeholders, outlines the ceremonial proceedings and records the conferral of an honorary Doctor of Literature degree on Professor Herbert Walter Pahl. It lists graduates across the Faculties of Arts, Divinity and Education, documenting qualifications in librarianship, journalism and media studies, fine art, music, theology, teacher education and the humanities. Postgraduate research covers Grahamstown’s history, the Theopolis Mission, the life of William Shaw, South African economic sanctions, psychological experiences of psychotherapy, and the history of 1820 Settler diaries. Doctoral research addresses South African manufacturing and pricing, church history, Zulu linguistics, musicology and early gold-mining companies on the Witwatersrand. The programme also records scholarships, bursaries and academic prizes, including awards related to Eastern Cape history, environmental studies, speech and drama, and scientific research. As a primary institutional source, it preserves graduate names, qualifications, research titles and academic distinctions, supporting biographical, genealogical and regional historical research into Rhodes University and higher education in South Africa during the early 1980s.
