Abstract
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Saturday, 11 April 1981, at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The twelve-page programme identifies university officeholders, outlines the ceremonial proceedings and records the conferral of an honorary Doctor of Literature degree on writer and journalist Jack Cope. It lists graduates across the Faculties of Arts, Divinity and Education, documenting qualifications in librarianship, journalism, translation, fine art, music, theology, teacher education and the humanities. Postgraduate research explores South African press censorship during the Angolan War, labour migration and family life in Ciskei, the history of the 1820 Settlers, housing economics, English literature and educational practices. Notable doctoral research examines social interaction in a Black South African township and the liturgies of Guillaume Farel. The programme also records academic honours, colours and half-colours awarded for achievements in 1980. As a primary historical source, it preserves graduate names, qualifications and research topics, providing valuable evidence of Rhodes University’s academic activities and supporting biographical, genealogical and regional historical research into higher education and society in South Africa during the early 1980s.
