Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Friday, 10 April 1981, at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The nine-page programme identifies university officeholders, outlines the ceremonial proceedings and records honorary degrees awarded to Lucy Buyaphi Mvubelo (Doctor of Social Science) and Professor John Hemsworth Osborn Day (Doctor of Science). It lists graduates across the Faculties of Science, Pharmacy, Commerce, Social Science and Law, documenting qualifications in computer science, geology, ecology, accounting, economics, social work and pharmaceutical sciences. Postgraduate research explores Eastern Cape biodiversity, wildlife ecology, geology, pharmaceutical science and economic development. Notable studies examine the social organisation of greater kudu in the Andries Vosloo Kudu Reserve, fish biology in the Eastern Cape, recolonisation in the Bushmans River estuary, the urban informal sector in Ciskei, and the ecology of wasps and bees near Grahamstown. Doctoral research also investigates the experiences of Black and White women domestic workers and their employers in the Eastern Cape, as well as distribution practices among South African manufacturers. As a primary historical source, the programme preserves graduate names, qualifications and research topics, providing valuable evidence of Rhodes University's academic activities and supporting biographical, genealogical and regional historical research into higher education and society in South Africa during the early 1980s.
