Abstract
The digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Friday, 11 April 1980, at 8 p.m. at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The ten-page programme identifies the university’s Chancellor, Ian Mackenzie; Vice-Chancellor, D.S. Henderson; Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Professor J.W. Brommert; the deans of the faculties; and the Registrar, W.J. Askew. It outlines the formal proceedings, including the national anthem, a Scripture reading and prayer by Professor J.A.B. Holland, an address by the Archbishop of Cape Town, the presentation of qualifications, and the awarding of an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree to the Most Reverend Bill Bendyshe Burnett. The programme lists graduates across the Faculties of Arts, Divinity and Education, documenting diplomas and certificates, undergraduate degrees, honours qualifications, master’s degrees and doctorates. The Faculty of Arts includes qualifications in librarianship, fine art, music, translation, journalism and the humanities, while the Faculty of Education records teaching diplomas and education degrees. The postgraduate research titles are particularly valuable for understanding the university’s scholarly priorities in 1980. They cover African languages, literature, psychology, history, geography, philosophy, musicology, education and theology. Notable research topics include the relationship between academic aptitude and study habits among first-year students, with specific reference to the University of Fort Hare; the image of agriculture in two Ciskeian communities; the relationship between the Orange Free State and the Rolong of Thaba ’Nchu between 1864 and 1888; and semantic fields and cultural structures in comparative Sotho and Xhosa studies. Other research addresses educational theatre in Eastern Cape secondary schools, achievement motivation among educated Black employees in the mining industry, and the development of choral training in South African schools. The programme also records three Doctor of Philosophy graduates in the Faculty of Arts and one in the Faculty of Education, as well as a Master of Music graduate. The final page lists academic honours, colours and half-colours awarded for 1979, providing additional evidence of student achievement and university life. As a primary institutional source, this document preserves the names and academic achievements of Rhodes University graduates and offers insight into the university’s leadership, disciplinary structure and research interests at the beginning of the 1980s. It is a useful resource for genealogical enquiries, biographical research, alumni identification and the study of higher education in the Eastern Cape, particularly where research intersects with regional history, African languages, education and social development
