Abstract
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Saturday, 7 April 1979, at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The ten-page programme identifies the university’s Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, faculty deans and Registrar, and outlines the formal proceedings, including the national anthem, prayer, address by the Bishop of Grahamstown and presentation of qualifications. It provides an extensive register of graduates across the Faculties of Arts, Divinity and Education, listing diplomas, undergraduate degrees, honours qualifications, master’s degrees and doctorates. The Faculty of Arts section documents qualifications in librarianship, fine art, music, translation, journalism and humanities disciplines, while the Faculty of Education records teaching diplomas and education degrees. Particularly significant is the listing of Professor Winifred Alice Maxwell for the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws. The postgraduate research titles offer valuable insight into the university’s scholarly interests in 1979, covering South African history, African political studies, linguistics, literature, anthropology, geography, psychology, musicology, economics and education. Notable research includes studies of Anglican missionary policy in Grahamstown, land and labour in South Africa between 1924 and 1934, labour migration among the Gcaleka, Graaff-Reinet during the Great Depression, and the development of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in southern Africa. The programme also records research on special education in the Eastern Cape. As a primary institutional source, this document preserves the names and academic achievements of Rhodes University graduates and provides evidence of the university’s historical academic leadership, disciplinary development and research priorities. It is a useful resource for genealogical enquiries, biographical research, alumni identification and the study of higher education in the Eastern Cape during the late 1970s.
