Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Saturday, 8 April 1978, at the 1820 Settlers National Monument. The eight-page programme identifies university officeholders, outlines the ceremonial proceedings and records honorary degrees awarded to Dr William Hofmeyr Craib and Emeritus Professor Edgar Donald Mountain (Doctors of Science), and Mr John Douglas Roberts (Doctor of Laws). It lists graduates across the Faculties of Science, Commerce, Social Science and Law, including qualifications in mathematics, chemistry, physics, geology, microbiology, pharmacy, accounting, economics, social work and law. Postgraduate research examines topics such as bacterial degradation of pesticides, fish taxonomy in Lake Tanganyika, pharmaceutical formulations, the geology of the Eastern Cape, the ecology of South African estuaries, atmospheric physics and the anatomy of the Triassic dinosaur Syntarsus rhodesiensis. The programme also documents research into transport requirements in an Eastern Cape urban area and communication through press advertisements. As a primary historical source, it preserves graduate names, academic achievements and research topics, providing valuable evidence of Rhodes University’s scientific scholarship, professional education and institutional history in the late 1970s, and supporting institutional, biographical, genealogical and regional historical research.
