Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Friday, 7 April 1978, at the 1820 Settlers National Monument. The twelve-page programme identifies university officeholders, outlines the ceremonial proceedings and records honorary degrees awarded to the Honourable Allen Gilmor Jennett (Doctor of Laws), Colonel Laurens Jan van der Post (Doctor of Literature) and Frederick Johannes van Wyk (Doctor of Laws). It lists graduates across the Faculties of Arts, Education and Divinity, including qualifications in humanities, journalism, fine art, music, theology and education. Postgraduate research covers Xhosa history, the Bondelswarts Rebellion of 1922, the Ciskei political party system, African theological education, South African social and economic history, literature, psychology and musicology. The programme also documents diplomas in librarianship, education, social work, theology, personnel management and translation, alongside scholarships, bursaries and academic prizes awarded for work completed in 1977. Of particular relevance to library history, it records recipients of the Lower and Higher Diplomas in Librarianship, while the Ernest Oppenheimer Trust Scholarship recognises research in 1820 Settler and Eastern Cape history. As a primary historical source, the programme preserves graduate achievements and provides valuable evidence of Rhodes University’s academic activities, research priorities and professional training in the late 1970s, supporting institutional, biographical, genealogical and regional historical research.
