Abstract
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Saturday, 2 April 1977, at the 1820 Settlers National Monument. The eight-page programme identifies university officeholders and records the conferral of an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree on the Right Reverend Alpheus Hamilton Zulu. It lists graduates from the Faculties of Arts, Education and Divinity, including qualifications in English, history, African studies, journalism, physical education, fine art, music and theology. Postgraduate research covers Xhosa history and psychology, Eastern Cape Afrikaans dialects, child labour legislation in nineteenth-century Britain, cross-cultural sensory perception, South African interest rates, English linguistics, philosophy and music education. Notable research includes Jeffrey Peires’s study of Xhosa history from approximately 1700 to 1835 and investigations into Xhosa cultural experience and Owambo acculturation. The programme records bachelor’s, honours, master’s and doctoral qualifications, preserving the names and academic achievements of graduates. As a primary historical source, it provides valuable evidence of Rhodes University’s academic activities, research interests and institutional traditions in the late 1970s, supporting institutional, biographical, genealogical and regional historical research.
