Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Friday, 1 April 1977, at the 1820 Settlers National Monument. The eleven-page programme identifies university officeholders, outlines the ceremonial proceedings and records honorary Doctor of Laws degrees awarded to the Honourable Mr Justice Johannes Dante Cloete and Professor Emeritus John Vernon Lockhart Rennie. It lists graduates across the Faculties of Science, Commerce, Social Science and Law, with qualifications in computer science, mathematics, botany, microbiology, pharmacy, accounting, economics, psychology and social work. Postgraduate research covers bacterial degradation of pesticides, fish ecology in the Eastern Cape, geology in southern Africa, agricultural grazing patterns, pharmaceutical testing, biological control, environmental pollution and the ecology of freshwater fish in Lake Sibaya. The programme also documents diplomas in librarianship, education, fine art, music, translation and social work, alongside scholarships, bursaries and academic prizes awarded for work completed in 1976. Of particular regional significance is the Ernest Oppenheimer Trust Scholarship for 1820 Settler and Eastern Cape history, awarded to M. W. Spicer. As a primary historical source, the programme preserves graduate achievements and provides valuable evidence of Rhodes University’s academic development, research priorities, professional training and institutional traditions in the late 1970s, supporting institutional, biographical, genealogical and regional historical research.
