Abstract
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Saturday, 10 April 1976, in the University Great Hall. The eight-page programme identifies university officeholders, outlines the ceremonial proceedings and records the conferral of an honorary Doctor of Laws degree on Dr James Morton Hyslop. It lists graduates across the Faculties of Science, Commerce, Social Science and Law, including qualifications in computer science, mathematics, botany, zoology, pharmacy, accounting, business administration, social work and law. Postgraduate research covers microbiology, ichthyology, geology, zoology, geography, psychology, chemistry and physics, with topics including bacterial degradation of acaricides, fish ecology in the Eastern Cape, biological control of jointed cactus, sediment-yield modelling, Karoo dolerite geochemistry, coastal palaeoenvironments and molecular association in alcohol solutions. The programme also records doctoral research into atomic absorption spectrometry and the behaviour of cichlid fishes in Southern Africa. As a primary historical source, it preserves graduate achievements and provides valuable evidence of Rhodes University's scientific research, professional education and academic priorities in the mid-1970s, supporting institutional, biographical and regional historical research.
