Abstract
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Saturday, 12 April 1975, in the University Great Hall. The eight-page programme identifies university officeholders, outlines the ceremonial proceedings and records the award of an honorary Master of Arts degree to Thomas Hugh Grocott. It lists graduates from the Faculties of Arts, Education and Divinity, including qualifications in humanities, journalism, physical education, fine art, music and theology. Postgraduate research covers English literature, history, geography, psychology, economics, French and Afrikaans/Nederlands, with topics including the history of 1820 Settler J. C. Chase, the geography of East London apartment areas, Katherine Mansfield’s short stories, colonial government at the Cape between 1825 and 1834, the history of the Graaff-Reinet district, and the poetry of Breyten Breytenbach. The programme also records André Philippus Brink’s Doctor of Literature degree for his contributions to Afrikaans prose, drama and poetry. As a primary historical source, it preserves graduate achievements and provides valuable evidence of Rhodes University’s academic activities, literary scholarship, historical research and institutional traditions in the mid-1970s, supporting institutional, biographical, genealogical and regional historical research.
