Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Friday, 11 April 1975, in the University Great Hall. The eleven-page programme identifies university officeholders, outlines the ceremonial proceedings and records the conferral of an honorary Doctor of Laws degree on Ian Mackenzie. It lists graduates across the Faculties of Science, Commerce, Social Science and Law, including qualifications in mathematics, computer science, physics, geology, pharmacy, economics, accounting and social work. Postgraduate research covers mathematical statistics, formalised arithmetic, Southern African beetle taxonomy, pharmaceutical chemistry, tick ecology in the Eastern Cape, aquatic biology in Lake Sibaya, the geology of the Pilanesberg and the African press in South Africa. The programme also documents diplomas and certificates in librarianship, education, fine art, music, law and social work, alongside scholarships, bursaries and academic prizes awarded for work completed in 1974. Of particular relevance to regional and library history are the Higher and Lower Diplomas in Librarianship and the Ernest Oppenheimer Trust Scholarship for 1820 Settler and Eastern Cape history, awarded to J. B. Peires. As a primary historical source, the programme preserves graduate achievements and provides insight into Rhodes University's academic activities, research priorities and professional training in the mid-1970s, supporting institutional, biographical, genealogical and regional historical research.
