Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Friday, 5 April 1974, in the University Great Hall. The nine-page programme identifies university officeholders, outlines the ceremonial proceedings and lists graduates across the Faculties of Arts, Education and Divinity, including qualifications in English, history, African studies, journalism, fine art, music, psychology and theology. Postgraduate research includes studies of short-term memory and eidetic imagery, Wordsworth’s poetry, the Eastern Cape separatist movement, frontier settlements in the Stormberg region between 1820 and 1860, the economic structure of the Cape Midlands and Karoo, and the musical life of 1820 Settler Henry Hare Dugmore. The programme also documents diplomas and certificates in librarianship, education, law, social work, personnel management and other professional fields, alongside scholarships, bursaries and academic prizes awarded for work completed in 1973. Of particular relevance to regional and library history, it records the Higher and Lower Diplomas in Librarianship and the Ernest Oppenheimer Trust Scholarship for 1820 Settler and Eastern Cape history. As a primary historical source, the programme preserves graduate achievements and provides insight into Rhodes University’s academic activities, research interests and professional training in the early 1970s, supporting institutional, biographical, genealogical and regional historical research.
