Abstract
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Saturday, 14 April 1973, in the University Great Hall. The seven-page programme identifies university officeholders, outlines the ceremonial proceedings and records the conferral of an honorary Doctor of Literature degree on Mr Victor Norton. It lists graduates from the Faculties of Arts, Education and Divinity, including qualifications in humanities, journalism, fine art, music, physical education and theology. Postgraduate research covers psychology, English literature, classical studies, French literature, education, sociology and music, with topics including Shakespeare’s Coriolanus, South African English poetry published between 1824 and 1851, Jewish identity in Johannesburg, the sociology of sport in South Africa, and the history and training of wind bands. The programme also documents honours degrees and master’s and doctoral qualifications, preserving the names and academic achievements of graduates. As a primary historical source, it provides valuable evidence of Rhodes University’s academic activities, research interests and institutional traditions in the early 1970s, supporting institutional, biographical and genealogical research and studies of higher education in South Africa.
