Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Friday, 2 April 1971, in the University Great Hall. The ten-page programme identifies university officeholders, outlines the proceedings and records honorary degrees awarded to Miss Marjorie Courtenay-Latimer and Dr the Honourable Edgar H. Brookes. It lists graduates across the Faculties of Science, Commerce, Social Science and Law, including qualifications in chemistry, zoology, microbiology, pharmacy, economics, accounting and law. Postgraduate research covers topics such as collagen structure, tick ecology in the Eastern Cape, pharmaceutical preservation, citrus pests, child psychology, fungal development and maize germination. The programme also documents diplomas and certificates in librarianship, education, music, fine art, law and other professional fields, alongside scholarships, bursaries and academic prizes awarded for work completed in 1970. Of particular relevance to library history, it records recipients of the Diploma and Lower Diploma in Librarianship, as well as the Ernest Oppenheimer Memorial Trust Scholarship for 1820 Settler and Eastern Cape history. As a primary historical source, the programme preserves graduate achievements and provides insight into Rhodes University’s academic priorities, research activities and professional training in the early 1970s, supporting institutional, biographical and genealogical research.
