Abstract
This digitised programme documents the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on 10 April 1970, recording the conferral of degrees, diplomas and honorary awards, and identifying the university’s principal officeholders. It lists graduates in the Faculties of Arts and Education, including qualifications in fine art and music, and highlights postgraduate research in African studies, literature, history, philosophy, economics, music and psychology. Research topics include the religious system of the Ndlambe of East London, Emily Dickinson’s poetry, Franco-German economic relations, developmental reading and South African monetary economics. The programme also records professional qualifications, including diplomas in librarianship, and scholarships, bursaries and academic prizes awarded for work completed in 1969. As a primary historical source, it provides valuable evidence of Rhodes University’s academic activities, research interests, professional training and institutional traditions at the beginning of the 1970s, supporting institutional, biographical and genealogical research.
