Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held in the University Great Hall on Saturday, 6 April 1968, at 10:30 a.m. The six-page programme documents the conferral of undergraduate, honours, master's and doctoral degrees across several faculties. Page 2 outlines the ceremonial proceedings and identifies the university's principal officeholders, including Chancellor W. J. Busschau, Vice-Chancellor J. M. Hyslop, Pro-Vice-Chancellor J. V. L. Rennie and Registrar W. J. Askew. The programme also records honorary degrees awarded to Dr V. F. M. Fitzsimons (Doctor of Science) and C. J. Ross-Spencer (Doctor of Laws).
Pages 3–6 list graduates from the Faculties of Science, Commerce, Social Science and Law, including qualifications in chemistry, mathematics, mathematical statistics, psychology, zoology, pharmacy, accounting, economics, business economics, sociology and mercantile law. Academic distinctions are recorded in several disciplines, including mathematics, chemistry, pharmacy, zoology, accounting and economics. The programme also documents postgraduate research of particular scientific and regional significance. Master's research includes investigations into activity rhythms in the larvae of Myrmeleon obscurus and the propagation of radio pulses between Grahamstown and Durban. Doctoral research encompasses the effects of ultraviolet and gamma irradiation on soluble calf-skin collagen, the ecology of Upogebia africana, the biology of the sociable weaver, studies of South African citrus psyllids, and the structure of sulphated polysaccharides in marine algae. A further doctoral thesis investigates the measurement of group differences in social concepts.
As a primary historical source, the programme provides valuable evidence of Rhodes University's academic achievements, research priorities and institutional traditions in the late 1960s. It documents the development of scientific research in South Africa, particularly in chemistry, physics, zoology, entomology and marine biology, while preserving the names and qualifications of graduates for biographical and genealogical research. The document also contributes to the institutional history of Rhodes University and the study of higher education and postgraduate scholarship in South Africa during the apartheid era.
