Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held in the University Great Hall on Friday, 5 April 1968, at 8 p.m. The ten-page programme documents the conferral of undergraduate, honours, master's and doctoral degrees, as well as diplomas, certificates and academic awards. Page 2 outlines the ceremonial proceedings and identifies the university's principal officeholders, including Chancellor W. J. Busschau, Vice-Chancellor J. M. Hyslop, Pro-Vice-Chancellor J. V. L. Rennie and Registrar W. J. Askew. The programme also records honorary degrees awarded to the Honourable O. H. Hoexter (Doctor of Laws) and the Reverend J. McDowall (Doctor of Divinity).
Pages 3–6 list graduates from the Faculties of Arts, Science, Commerce, Social Science, Education and Divinity, with qualifications in disciplines including English, history, psychology, philosophy, French, Afrikaans/Nederlands, music, fine art, pharmacy, economics, zoology, chemistry, physics, education and theology. Academic distinctions are recorded in subjects such as English, history, psychology, biblical studies, systematic theology and the theory of music. Pages 6–7 document postgraduate research, including studies of the South African Commercial Advertiser and the Eastern Frontier between 1834 and 1847, human communication, absenteeism in the footwear industry, Arthur Miller's plays, music history and the work of South African composer Benjamin Tyamzashe. Doctoral research addresses employee motivation and job satisfaction among workers in Zambia's copper-mining industry, illustrating the scope of social-scientific inquiry undertaken at the university.
Pages 7–9 record diplomas and certificates in fine art, physical education, music, librarianship, education, law, personnel welfare and management, accountancy and secretarial practice. The final two pages document scholarships, bursaries and prizes, including Rhodes Scholarships, research scholarships, postgraduate fellowships, the Ernest Oppenheimer Memorial Trust Scholarship for 1820 Settler and Eastern Cape history, and awards recognising academic achievement. As a primary historical source, the programme provides evidence of Rhodes University's academic activities, research priorities, institutional leadership and traditions in the late 1960s. It supports institutional, biographical and genealogical research, as well as broader studies of higher education, scholarly development and the history of academic disciplines in South Africa.
