Abstract
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held in the University Great Hall on Saturday, 8 April 1967. The eight-page programme documents the conferral of undergraduate, honours, master's and doctoral degrees across the university's Faculties of Arts, Science, Commerce, Social Science, Education, Divinity and Law. Page 2 outlines the ceremonial proceedings and identifies the university's principal officeholders, including Chancellor W. J. Busschau, Vice-Chancellor J. M. Hyslop, Pro-Vice-Chancellor J. V. L. Rennie and Registrar W. J. Askew. The programme also records honorary degrees awarded to Dr M. A. Pocock (Doctor of Science), Dr J. P. Duminy and Major the Honourable P. V. G. van der Byl (Doctors of Laws), and Mr A. Schauder (Doctor of Social Science). Pages 3–6 list graduates and academic distinctions in disciplines including fine art, music, pharmacy, commerce, social science, English, history, geography, philosophy, psychology, mathematics, entomology, chemistry, physics, zoology, geology, education, theology and law. Pages 7–8 document postgraduate research, providing a valuable record of the university's scholarly activities during the period. Master's research includes studies of philosophical ideas, Elizabethan drama, the novels of F. Scott Fitzgerald, Shakespearean literary traditions, music education, fish salinity tolerance, gold-mine geology and pharmaceutical preparations. Doctoral research addresses the ecology of the Vaal River, radio emissions from Jupiter, the chemistry of Leonotis species, the phytochemistry of South African aloes, compounds derived from Acacia mearnsii, and ionospheric effects associated with the Southern Radiation Anomaly. Research in commerce examines the relationship between scientific research, innovation and economic growth, as well as African retail traders in the Eastern Cape. Collectively, the programme provides primary-source evidence of Rhodes University's academic priorities, research contributions, graduate achievements and institutional traditions in the mid-1960s. It supports institutional, biographical and genealogical research, as well as broader investigations into the history of higher education, scientific research and scholarly development in South Africa.
