Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the special graduation ceremony and formal installation of William John Busschau as Chancellor of Rhodes University, held in the University Great Hall on Friday, 1 April 1966. The four-page programme documents the ceremonial proceedings and the institutional protocols associated with the appointment of a new university Chancellor. Page 1 identifies the occasion and its date, while page 2 outlines the order of proceedings, including the academic procession, the constitution of the congregation by the Vice-Chancellor, the singing of Die Stem van Suid-Afrika, prayers led by the Dean of Divinity, and the conferral of an honorary Doctor of Laws degree on Busschau. Page 3 records the formal installation ceremony, during which the Chairman of the University Council presents the Chancellor-elect to the Vice-Chancellor, who administers the pledge of office and formally invests Busschau with the authority, rights and privileges of the Chancellorship. The ceremony concludes with the presentation of the newly installed Chancellor to the congregation and an address by Busschau. Page 4 provides biographical and institutional information about the principal officeholders, including Busschau as Chancellor-elect, J. M. Hyslop as Principal and Vice-Chancellor, J. V. L. Rennie as Vice-Principal and Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Justice J. D. Cloete as Chairman of Council, W. D. Maxwell as Dean of Divinity, and R. Martin as Registrar. As a primary historical source, the programme provides evidence of Rhodes University's governance structures, ceremonial traditions, academic leadership and institutional identity during the mid-1960s. It is a valuable resource for institutional history, research into university governance and leadership, and the study of academic ritual and tradition in South African higher education
