Abstract
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held in the University Great Hall on Saturday, 2 April 1966. The twelve-page programme identifies Chancellor W. J. Busschau, Vice-Chancellor J. M. Hyslop, Registrar R. Martin and the university's faculty deans, and outlines the ceremonial proceedings. As recorded on page 2, honorary degrees were to be conferred on Professor N. P. van Wyk Louw (Doctor of Literature), Dr A. W. Burton and W. J. B. Slater (Doctors of Laws), and the Most Reverend R. S. Taylor and the Reverend Dr A. J. van der Merwe (Doctors of Divinity). Pages 3–8 document graduates across the Faculties of Arts, Science, Commerce, Social Science, Education, Divinity and Law, including bachelor's, honours, master's and doctoral qualifications. The listings record distinctions in subjects such as English, history, economics, Roman-Dutch law, chemistry, botany, physics, mathematical statistics, sociology and theology. The postgraduate research documented on pages 8–9 reflects the breadth of scholarship undertaken at Rhodes during the period. Topics include philosophical analyses of behaviour, historical reminiscences of Thomas Stubbs, the rhythmic and melodic structures of Brahms's symphonies, the respiratory physiology of South African freshwater snails, the stratigraphy of the Cape and Karoo geological systems in the Eastern Cape, ionospheric disturbances, pineapple cultivation, Xhosa-English pronunciation in the south-eastern Cape, Gusii kinship, the Lumwana copper prospect in Zambia, irradiation effects in solids, and the history of Moravian mission stations at the Cape between 1737 and 1869. Pages 10–11 record diplomas and certificates in physical education, music, teacher education, fine art, theology, personnel welfare and management, social studies, accountancy and secretarial practice. Pages 11–12 document scholarships, bursaries and academic prizes awarded for work completed during 1965, providing evidence of student funding and academic recognition. As a primary historical source, the programme offers valuable insight into Rhodes University's institutional development, academic priorities, research activities and educational traditions in the mid-1960s. It supports institutional, biographical and genealogical research, as well as broader studies of higher education and the development of scholarly disciplines in South Africa
