Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held in the University Great Hall on Saturday, 10 April 1965. The twelve-page programme outlines the ceremonial proceedings, identifies Chancellor P. J. du Toit, Vice-Chancellor J. M. Hyslop, Registrar R. Martin and the deans of the university's faculties, and records the conferment of honorary degrees on Professor P. R. Kirby (Doctor of Literature), Dr H. F. Oppenheimer (Doctor of Laws) and the Very Reverend Dr R. H. W. Shepherd (Doctor of Divinity). Pages 3–9 document graduates across the Faculties of Arts, Science, Commerce, Social Science, Education, Divinity and Law, including bachelor's, honours, master's and doctoral qualifications, with distinctions in disciplines such as history, English, economics, sociology, chemistry, physics, geology, pharmacy, theology and law. The postgraduate research listed on page 9 illustrates the breadth of scholarship undertaken at Rhodes during this period. Topics include ionospheric effects observed at sunrise, the influence of heavy-metal balances on fungal growth, the geology of south-western Albany, probability theory, the dramatic theory of William Hazlitt, Xhosa-English pronunciation in the south-eastern Cape, schistosomiasis transmission in Southern Rhodesia, and the Lumwana copper prospect in Zambia. Pages 10–11 record diplomas and certificates in fine art, physical education, music, teacher education, theology, law, personnel welfare and management, social studies, accountancy and secretarial practice. The final page lists scholarships, bursaries and academic prizes awarded for work completed during 1964, documenting forms of financial support and academic recognition available to students. As a primary historical source, the programme provides valuable evidence of Rhodes University's institutional development, research priorities, graduate achievements and professional training in the mid-1960s. It supports institutional, biographical and genealogical research, as well as broader studies of higher education and the development of scholarly disciplines in South Africa.
