Abstract
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held in the University Great Hall on Saturday, 11 April 1964. The twelve-page programme outlines the formal proceedings, identifies Chancellor P. J. du Toit, Vice-Chancellor J. M. Hyslop, Registrar R. Martin and the university's faculty deans, and records the presentation of an honorary Doctor of Laws degree to Dr T. Alty. The document lists graduates across the Faculties of Arts, Science, Commerce, Social Science, Education, Divinity and Law, as well as recipients of qualifications in Fine Arts, Music and Pharmacy. Pages 3–8 record bachelor's, honours, master's and doctoral degrees, with distinctions in disciplines including history, English, philosophy, economics, sociology, chemistry, physics, geology, mathematics, pharmacy and law. Pages 8–9 document postgraduate research reflecting the breadth of scholarship at Rhodes during the period. Topics include industrial development in East London, social stratification among African workers in Northern Rhodesia's copper-mining industry, the use of myth in the work of T. S. Eliot, the social position of the artist in Henry James's novels, the geology of the Transkei, the crystal structure of caesium permanganate, the South Atlantic radiation anomaly, wool-processing chemistry, marine invertebrate physiology and the ecology of disease-transmitting snails in Southern Rhodesia. Pages 10–11 list diplomas and certificates in fine art, music, education, personnel welfare and management, social studies, accountancy, secretarial practice and religious knowledge. The final page records scholarships, bursaries, fellowships and academic prizes awarded for work completed during 1963, providing insight into student support and academic recognition. As a primary historical source, the programme offers valuable evidence of Rhodes University's institutional development, research priorities, academic achievements and professional training in the mid-twentieth century. It supports institutional, biographical and genealogical research, as well as broader investigations into the history of higher education and scholarly disciplines in South Africa.
