Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held in the University Great Hall on Saturday, 6 April 1963. The twelve-page programme outlines the ceremonial proceedings, identifies the university's Vice-Chancellor, T. Alty, Registrar R. Martin and faculty deans, and records an address by the Honourable O. D. Schreiner. As detailed on page 2, honorary Doctor of Laws degrees were conferred on Dr E. G. Malherbe and O. D. Schreiner. The programme documents undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications across the Faculties of Arts, Science, Commerce, Social Science, Divinity, Law and Education, including bachelor's, honours, master's and doctoral degrees, as well as diplomas and certificates. Pages 3–6 list graduates and distinctions in disciplines including English, history, Latin, Roman-Dutch law, psychology, sociology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, pharmacy, geology and accounting. Pages 8–9 record postgraduate research topics spanning social anthropology, Afrikaans and Dutch literature, musicology, chemistry, physics, entomology, zoology and geology. These include studies of the role of the church in an urban African society, literary fiction and poetry, Beethoven's string quartets, radio emissions from Jupiter, insect neuromuscular physiology, the biology of ticks and the geology of the Miami Mica Field in the Urungwe District. The programme also documents master's research in education, including an investigation into the spelling abilities of English- and Afrikaans-speaking pupils in South African schools. Pages 10–11 list diplomas and certificates in fine art, physical education, music, teacher education, theology, social work and personnel management, while page 12 records scholarships, bursaries, fellowships and academic prizes awarded for work completed during 1962. As a primary historical source, this programme provides valuable evidence of Rhodes University's academic development, research priorities, professional training and institutional traditions in the early 1960s. It supports institutional, biographical and genealogical research, as well as broader investigations into the history of higher education and scholarly disciplines in South Africa.
