Abstract
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held in the University Great Hall on Saturday, 14 April 1962. The four-page programme identifies the university's Chancellor, Sir Basil Schonland, Vice-Chancellor T. Alty and Registrar R. Martin, and outlines the ceremonial proceedings, including prayers, an address to the congregation by Mrs M. L. Ballinger, and the presentation of candidates for bachelor's and doctoral degrees. Pages 3–4 document graduates in the Faculties of Arts and Science, including Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science qualifications and a Doctor of Philosophy degree. The programme records distinctions in Xhosa, geography, applied mathematics and chemistry, reflecting the range of academic disciplines represented among the graduating cohort. Of particular scholarly interest is the doctoral research of Herby Silvester Govinden in the Department of Chemistry, titled The Construction of a Wide-Frequency Range Double Heterodyne Conductance Bridge and its Use in the Investigation of Polarisation Errors in Conductance Measurements. This research provides evidence of specialised scientific investigation undertaken at Rhodes University in the early 1960s. The lists of graduands preserve the names of students attending the ceremony and those graduating in absentia, offering a resource for biographical and genealogical research. The programme also records the University Education Diploma awarded to Preston Vuyisile Maneli and the Diploma in Theology awarded to Cornelius Thembile Mzimba, both classified as non-graduate recipients. The inclusion of graduates from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds reflects the student population represented in the university's academic records during the apartheid era. As a primary historical source, the programme provides valuable evidence of Rhodes University's academic activities, institutional traditions and graduate achievements in 1962. It supports research into the history of higher education in South Africa, the development of scientific scholarship, and the biographical and genealogical histories of the individuals named in the document.
