Abstract
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held in the University Great Hall on Saturday, 31 March 1962. The twelve-page programme identifies the university's Chancellor, Sir Basil Schonland, Vice-Chancellor T. Alty, Registrar R. Martin and the deans responsible for the various faculties. Page 2 outlines the ceremonial proceedings, including prayers, an address by the Vice-Chancellor and the presentation of candidates for bachelor's, honours, master's and doctoral degrees. Pages 3–7 document graduates across the Faculties of Arts, Science, Commerce, Social Science, Education, Divinity and Law, as well as qualifications in Fine Arts, Music and Pharmacy. The programme records distinctions in subjects including history, Afrikaans-Nederlands, English, Roman-Dutch law, chemistry, botany, zoology, geology, geography, mathematics, physics, psychology and sociology. Of particular scholarly interest are the postgraduate research projects listed on page 9, which address topics such as land use in the Stutterheim district, trace-element analysis in citrus leaves, thorium oxalate complexes, sulphur determination in plant material, solar eclipses and the ionosphere, aquatic fungi in South Africa, tick distribution in the Eastern Cape, and the vegetation of Southern Rhodesia and grass cover in Africa. Doctoral research includes investigations into the thermal decomposition of permanganates and the chemical composition of wattle bark species. Pages 10–11 document diplomas and certificates in fine art, education, personnel welfare and management, social studies, law, accountancy, secretarial practice and religious knowledge. The final page records scholarships, bursaries and academic prizes awarded for work completed during 1961, providing insight into student support and academic recognition. As a primary historical source, the programme offers valuable evidence of Rhodes University's academic development, research priorities and institutional traditions in the early 1960s. It supports institutional, biographical and genealogical research, as well as broader studies of higher education and the history of scientific and scholarly disciplines in South Africa.
