Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held in the University Great Hall on Saturday, 22 April 1961. The four-page programme identifies the university's Chancellor, Sir Basil Schonland, Vice-Chancellor T. Alty and Registrar R. Martin, and outlines the ceremonial proceedings, including prayers, an address by the Chancellor, the presentation of graduands and the awarding of degrees and diplomas. Of particular significance is the conferment of honorary Doctor of Laws degrees on Dr A. Kerr and Professor Z. K. Matthews, as recorded on page 2. Pages 3–4 document graduates in the Faculties of Arts, Science and Education, including bachelor's degrees, honours qualifications, a master's degree and the University Education Diploma. The programme records distinctions in philosophy, geography, chemistry, psychology and social anthropology, reflecting the breadth of academic disciplines represented among the graduating cohort. Of particular historical interest is Hubert Mongameli Dyasi's Master of Education thesis, The History and Problems of Bantu Urban Secondary Education in the Eastern Cape 1937–1954 (Ciskei Region), which provides evidence of research into educational policy and development affecting Black South Africans during the apartheid era. The lists of graduates also preserve the names of students who attended the ceremony and those who graduated in absentia, offering a valuable resource for biographical and genealogical research. Page 4 additionally records diplomas awarded in 1960, including the University Education Diploma, with recipients classified as graduates, provisional graduates and non-graduates. As a primary historical source, the programme documents Rhodes University's academic traditions, graduate achievements and institutional relationships in the early 1960s. It supports research into the history of higher education in South Africa, educational access and inequality, and the development of African scholarship during apartheid.
