Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held in the University Great Hall on Saturday, 8 April 1961. The twelve-page programme identifies the university's Chancellor, Sir Basil Schonland, Vice-Chancellor T. Alty and Registrar R. Martin, and outlines the formal proceedings, including the presentation of graduands, the conferral of bachelor's, honours, master's, doctoral and higher degrees, and the awarding of diplomas and certificates. Pages 3–7 document graduates across the Faculties of Arts, Science, Commerce, Social Science, Divinity and Law, as well as qualifications in Fine Arts, Music, Pharmacy and Education. The lists record distinctions in subjects including English, history, psychology, Latin, Roman-Dutch law, chemistry, mathematics, physics, botany, geography, zoology, sociology and social anthropology. Of particular research interest are the postgraduate theses listed on pages 7–8, which address South African political history, regional economic and historical geography, geology, chemistry, entomology, botany and physics. Topics include John X. Merriman's political development, nineteenth-century communications in the Zuurveld, the geology of the Bindura Granite Complex, the economic and marketing patterns of pineapple farming in the Eastern Cape, citrus pest biology, solar radio noise and the contribution of the Anglican Church to education in the Cape. Doctoral research includes studies of the South African literary frontier, gold fineness in hydrothermal ores, land utilisation in the border region, trace-element analysis in plant material and the unification of South Africa between 1902 and 1910. Pages 9–10 document diplomas and certificates in fine art, music, physical education, teacher education, theology, law, social work, accountancy and secretarial practice. Pages 11–12 record scholarships, bursaries and academic prizes awarded for work completed during 1960, providing insight into student support and academic recognition. As a primary historical source, the programme offers valuable evidence of Rhodes University's institutional development, research priorities, academic achievements and professional training during the early 1960s. It supports institutional, biographical and genealogical research, as well as broader studies of higher education and the history of scholarly disciplines in South Africa.
