Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held in the University Great Hall on Saturday, 23 April 1960. The six-page programme identifies the university's Chancellor, B. F. J. Schonland, Vice-Chancellor T. Alty and Registrar R. Martin, and outlines the ceremonial proceedings, including prayers, an address by the Vice-Chancellor, the presentation of graduands and the awarding of degrees and diplomas. Pages 3–5 document the academic achievements of graduates in the Faculties of Arts, Science and Education, listing bachelor's and honours degrees in disciplines including psychology, English, chemistry, geography and physics. The programme records distinctions in several subjects and identifies graduates attending the ceremony as well as those graduating in absentia. Of particular historical significance is the list of Bachelor of Arts graduates on page 3, which documents the achievements of students bearing diverse African names and reflects the university's broader educational role in South Africa during the apartheid era. Page 4 records Bachelor of Science graduates, including distinctions in chemistry and psychology, alongside Bachelor of Education graduates and honours qualifications in psychology and English. Page 5 lists an honours degree in physics, while page 6 documents diplomas awarded in 1959, particularly the University Education Diploma and Diploma in Theology. The education diploma listings include graduates, provisional graduates and non-graduates, with distinctions in educational theory and teaching practice recorded for selected recipients. As a primary historical source, the programme provides valuable evidence of Rhodes University's academic activities, graduate achievements and institutional traditions in 1960. It supports research into the history of higher education in South Africa, educational access during apartheid, and the biographical and genealogical histories of the graduates named in the document.
