Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the graduation ceremony of Rhodes University, held in the University Great Hall on Saturday, 2 April 1960. The eleven-page programme identifies the university's Chancellor, B. F. J. Schonland, Vice-Chancellor T. Alty and Registrar R. Martin, and outlines the ceremonial proceedings, including an address by J. D. Cloete, the presentation of graduands, and the awarding of degrees, diplomas and certificates. Pages 3–8 document graduates across the Faculties of Arts, Science, Commerce, Social Science, Education, Law and Divinity, encompassing undergraduate, honours, master's and doctoral qualifications. The programme records distinctions in disciplines including English, history, geography, philosophy, chemistry, physics, mathematics, zoology, entomology, economics and sociology. Of particular scholarly interest are the postgraduate research topics listed on pages 8–9, including studies of municipal history in the Eastern Cape, farm labour in the region, the chemistry of silver oxide and zirconium compounds, copper-bearing geological formations in Northern Rhodesia, and solar radio noise. Doctoral research addresses insecticide resistance in the blue tick, differentiated post-primary education, and the history of Healdtown as a Methodist experiment in African education. The programme also documents diplomas in fine art, music, art teaching, education and social studies, alongside certificates in teacher education, accountancy and secretarial practice. Page 11 records scholarships, bursaries and academic prizes awarded for work completed during 1959, providing insight into student support and academic recognition at the university. As a primary historical source, this programme offers valuable evidence of Rhodes University's institutional development, academic priorities, research activities and educational traditions at the beginning of the 1960s. It supports institutional, biographical and genealogical research, as well as broader studies of the history of higher education and scholarly disciplines in South Africa.
