Abstract
This digitised archival document records the graduation ceremony of Rhodes University, held in the University Great Hall on Friday, 3 April 1959. The eleven-page programme documents the university's academic proceedings, including the presentation of graduands, the conferral of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, the awarding of diplomas and certificates, and the presentation of honorary degrees. As outlined on page 2, the ceremony included the conferment of honorary Doctor of Laws degrees on S. B. Hobson and Dr J. E. Holloway, and an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree on the Reverend Dr J. B. Webb. Pages 3–8 list graduates across the Faculties of Arts, Science, Commerce, Social Science, Education, Divinity and Law, including bachelor's, honours, master's and doctoral qualifications. The postgraduate research recorded on pages 7–8 reflects a diverse range of scholarly interests. Topics include the poetry and criticism of Ezra Pound, the development of municipal government in the Eastern Cape, the economic geography of the South African chicory industry, chemical methods for determining boron in plant material, the biology of the Jameson Reservoir, the historical development of geography in Cape schools, executive government at the Cape between 1825 and 1854, photofluorescence in organic materials, solar eclipse ionospheric studies, transport and communications in the Eastern Cape border region, and the composition and dating of the Book of Daniel. Pages 9–10 document diplomas and certificates in fine art, music, physical education, teacher education, theology, accountancy, secretarial practice and religious knowledge. The final page lists scholarships, bursaries, research studentships and academic prizes awarded for work completed during 1958. As a primary historical source, the programme provides valuable evidence of Rhodes University's institutional history, academic priorities, research activities and student achievements in the late 1950s. It supports institutional, biographical and genealogical research, as well as broader studies of the development of higher education and scholarly disciplines in South Africa.
