Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the graduation ceremony of the University College of Fort Hare, held on 25 April 1958 under the auspices of Rhodes University. The four-page programme documents the academic achievements of students who completed their qualifications during the 1957 academic year and outlines the ceremonial proceedings, including the constitution of the congregation, prayers, the conferral of degrees, the presentation of graduands and an address by Dr J. D. Mackie. The programme lists graduates in the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Master of Science and Bachelor of Education programmes, alongside recipients of university education diplomas, theological qualifications and an advanced diploma in agriculture. As detailed on pages 2–3, Bachelor of Arts graduates pursued subjects including history, psychology, economics, English, geography, social anthropology, public administration, politics and African languages such as Xhosa, Zulu, Northern Sotho and Tswana. Science graduates specialised in chemistry, zoology, botany, mathematics, physics and applied mathematics, with distinctions awarded in selected disciplines. Of particular scholarly interest are the master's research topics recorded on page 3: Thomas Sohl Thelejane's investigation into the relationship between feeding habits, jaw musculature and tooth types among South African golden moles, and Clive Roy Dennis's study of the morphology of the Weberian apparatus of Labco umbratus. Pages 3–4 also document graduates and diploma recipients in teacher education, theology and agriculture, illustrating the breadth of academic and professional training offered at Fort Hare. The programme preserves important evidence of the institution's academic traditions and its relationship with Rhodes University during the apartheid era. As a primary historical source, it supports research into Fort Hare's institutional history, the development of higher education for Black South Africans, and the biographical and genealogical histories of its graduates.
