Abstract
This digitised archival document records the graduation ceremony of Rhodes University, held in the University Great Hall on 28 March 1958. The twelve-page programme identifies the university's Chancellor, B. F. J. Schonland, Vice-Chancellor T. Alty and Registrar A. E. Shields, and outlines the formal proceedings, including the presentation of graduands, the awarding of degrees and diplomas, and the conferment of an honorary Doctor of Laws degree on Dr P. J. du Toit, a Fellow of the Royal Society. The programme documents qualifications across the Faculties of Arts, Science, Commerce, Social Science, Education, Divinity and Law, including bachelor's, honours, master's and doctoral degrees. As detailed on pages 3–7, the graduands received distinctions in disciplines such as English, French, history, politics, systematic theology, chemistry, zoology, applied mathematics, physics and economics. Pages 8–9 record postgraduate research reflecting the breadth of scholarship at Rhodes during the period. Topics include the development of government administration at the Cape under John Montagu, women's wages and employment in Durban's industries, the philosophy of John Locke and John Stuart Mill, the biology of ants associated with citrus trees, chemical analysis of soils and plants, the historical geography of travel at the Cape between 1750 and 1800, scorpion biology, South African Eucharistic rites, and the socio-ecological development of Grahamstown. Pages 10–11 document diplomas and certificates in fine art, education, personnel welfare and management, social work, theology, teaching, accountancy and secretarial practice. The final page records scholarships, bursaries, research studentships and academic prizes awarded for work completed during 1957. As a primary historical source, the programme provides valuable evidence of Rhodes University's institutional development, academic priorities, research activities and student achievements in the late 1950s. It supports institutional, biographical and genealogical research, as well as broader investigations into the history of higher education and scholarly disciplines in South Africa.
