Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held in the University Great Hall on 29 March 1957. The ten-page programme outlines the order of proceedings, identifies the university's Chancellor, B. F. J. Schonland, Vice-Chancellor T. Alty and Registrar A. E. Shields, and records an address by the Right Honourable Viscount Malvern. It also documents the conferment of honorary Doctor of Laws degrees on Viscount Malvern and the Honourable Albert van de Sandt Centlivres. The programme lists graduates across the Faculties of Arts, Science, Commerce, Social Science and Law, including bachelor's, honours, master's and doctoral qualifications, alongside diplomas and certificates awarded in 1956. The academic distinctions and research topics reflect the breadth of scholarship at Rhodes during this period. As recorded on page 7, postgraduate research includes studies of Afrikaans poetic vocabulary, liquid junction potentials, the ecology of micro-arthropods in pineapple-field soils in the Eastern Cape, the animal ecology of renosterbos, and the grasses of Southern Rhodesia. Doctoral theses address national independence in its international context, nineteenth-century British organ music, chemical phenomena in extremely dilute aqueous solutions, and voluntary welfare organisations in the Border and Transkei regions. Pages 8–9 document qualifications in music, education, production management, theology, accountancy, secretarial practice and religious knowledge. The final page records scholarships, bursaries, research studentships and academic prizes awarded for work completed during 1956. As a primary historical source, the programme provides valuable evidence of Rhodes University's institutional development, academic priorities, research activities and student achievements in the mid-twentieth century. It supports institutional, biographical and genealogical research, as well as broader investigations into the history of higher education and scholarly disciplines in South Africa.
