Abstract
This digitised archival document records the graduation ceremony of the University College of Fort Hare, held on 27 April 1956 under the auspices of Rhodes University. The four-page programme documents the academic achievements of students completing their qualifications during the 1955 academic year and outlines the ceremonial proceedings, including the academic procession, prayers, the conferral of degrees, addresses by university representatives and the awarding of diplomas and certificates. The graduands listed include recipients of the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Science with Honours degrees, alongside the University Education Diploma, Certificate in Theology and Advanced Diploma in Agriculture. As documented on pages 2–3, the Bachelor of Arts graduates studied a diverse range of subjects, including history, English, geography, politics, psychology, social anthropology, public administration and African languages such as Xhosa, Zulu, Southern Sotho, Northern Sotho and Tswana. The Bachelor of Science graduates pursued combinations of chemistry, zoology, botany, geography, mathematics and physics, with distinctions recorded in selected subjects. The final page lists recipients of professional and academic qualifications, highlighting Fort Hare's role in teacher education, theological training and agricultural instruction. The programme also preserves evidence of the institution's ceremonial traditions, including the singing of Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika and Morena Boloka. As a primary historical source, this document provides valuable insight into Fort Hare's academic programmes, graduate achievements and educational contribution during the apartheid era. It supports institutional, biographical and genealogical research, as well as broader investigations into the history of higher education for Black South Africans and the development of scholarship in Southern Africa.
