Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held in the University Great Hall on 6 April 1956, recognising the academic achievements of students who completed their qualifications during the 1955 academic year. The nine-page programme identifies the university's Chancellor, B. F. J. Schonland, Vice-Chancellor T. Alty and Registrar A. E. Shields, and outlines the ceremonial proceedings, including an address by Dr H. J. van Eck and the presentation of graduands by faculty deans. The document lists qualifications across the Faculties of Arts, Science, Commerce, Social Science, Education, Divinity and Law, encompassing bachelor's degrees, honours degrees, master's degrees and doctorates. It records distinctions in disciplines including history, English, philosophy, psychology, biblical studies, chemistry, botany, entomology, geology, geography, music and commerce. Of particular historical and scholarly interest are the postgraduate research topics documented on page 7, including Andrew Hadley Duminy's study of Sir Andries Stockenström's role in Cape politics between 1848 and 1856, Basil Alexander Le Cordeur's research on Robert Godlonton and frontier political opinion, Chloris Patricia Edmonstone-Sammons's botanical studies of pineapple black spot and citrus soil microflora, and Bertram Stanley Ellis's doctoral thesis on the genesis, development, fertility and use of the soils of Rhodesia. The programme also records research into fluorescent organic materials, crab reflex behaviour, soil analysis and scientific management in a South African sweet factory. Page 8 documents diplomas in fine art, music, education, production management and theology, while page 9 lists scholarships, bursaries and academic prizes awarded for work completed during 1955. Collectively, these records provide valuable primary-source evidence of Rhodes University's institutional history, academic priorities, research activities and scholarly achievements in the mid-twentieth century. The document supports institutional, biographical and genealogical research, as well as broader studies of the history of higher education, scientific research and disciplinary development in South Africa.
