Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the graduation ceremony of the University College of Fort Hare, held on 29 April 1955 under the auspices of Rhodes University. The seven-page programme outlines the ceremonial proceedings, including the academic processions, the constitution of the congregation by the Vice-Chancellor, prayers and hymns, the conferral of degrees, and an address by Dr the Honourable Edgar H. Brookes. The document lists graduands for the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees, alongside recipients of the University Education Diploma, Certificate in Theology and Advanced Diploma in Agriculture. The Bachelor of Arts graduates pursued a broad range of disciplines, including history, English, politics, geography, psychology, social anthropology, public administration, philosophy and African languages such as Xhosa, Zulu, Southern Sotho and Tswana. As detailed on pages 5–6, the programme identifies individual graduates and their major subjects, recording distinctions in Xhosa, Zulu, social anthropology, biblical studies, chemistry and other disciplines. The Bachelor of Science graduates specialised primarily in chemistry, zoology, botany, geography, mathematics and physics. Pages 4 and 7 document the contribution of Fort Hare to teacher education, theological training and agricultural education through the award of professional diplomas and certificates. The programme also preserves the ceremonial and linguistic context of the occasion, including the singing of Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika, Morena Boloka and the national anthems of the period. As a primary historical source, this record provides valuable evidence of Fort Hare's academic programmes, graduate achievements and institutional traditions during the apartheid era. It supports research into the history of higher education for Black South Africans, the development of African scholarship, and the biographical and genealogical histories of the graduates named in the programme.
