Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held at the Grahamstown City Hall on 1 April 1955, celebrating the academic achievements of students who completed their qualifications during the 1954 academic year. The ten-page programme identifies the university's Chancellor, B. F. J. Schonland, Vice-Chancellor T. Alty and Registrar A. E. Shields, and outlines the formal proceedings, including the presentation of graduands by faculty deans and the awarding of degrees, diplomas and certificates. The document lists qualifications across the Faculties of Arts, Science, Commerce, Divinity, Law and Social Science, encompassing bachelor's degrees, honours degrees, master's degrees and doctorates. It records distinctions in subjects including history, mathematics, chemistry, physics, botany, entomology, sociology, English, politics, theology and music. Of particular scholarly interest are the postgraduate research topics documented on pages 7–8, including Frank Leslie Moult's study of the geographical setting of East London; Florence Ellen Hewitt's botanical research on Hypmea spicifera; Derrick Graham Beadle's investigation into dust-sampling instruments; and studies of citrus orchard insect ecology, agricultural patterns in the Albany and Bathurst divisions, and the solubility of mercurous chloride. Doctoral research includes investigations into organic phosphors, silver halide solubility and the measurement of population growth, while Ulmont Victor Schneider's doctorate in music is represented by compositions for organ, orchestra, choir and soloists. Page 9 records diplomas in education, personnel welfare and management, and production management. The final page documents scholarships, bursaries, research fellowships and academic prizes awarded for work completed during 1954. As a primary historical source, the programme provides valuable evidence of Rhodes University's academic development, research priorities, student achievements and institutional traditions in the mid-twentieth century. It supports institutional, biographical and genealogical research, as well as broader studies of the history of higher education and scholarly disciplines in South Africa.
