Abstract
This digitised archival document records the graduation ceremony of Rhodes University, held at the University College of Fort Hare on 23 April 1954. The seven-page programme outlines the ceremonial proceedings, including the conferral of degrees, the presentation of graduands by academic representatives, the awarding of diplomas and certificates, and the conferment of an honorary Doctor of Philosophy degree on Professor D. D. T. Jabavu. The programme also records a presentation to Professor Jabavu from the Jabavu Thanksgiving Fund following the ceremony, highlighting his significance within the institution's academic and cultural history. The lists of graduands document qualifications in the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Science (Hygiene) programmes, alongside university education diplomas, theological qualifications and an advanced diploma in agriculture. As detailed on pages 5–6, the Bachelor of Arts graduates pursued subjects including history, English, geography, politics, psychology, social anthropology and African languages such as Xhosa, Zulu, Southern Sotho and Northern Sotho. Science graduates specialised in disciplines including chemistry, botany, zoology, geography, mathematics and physics, while the hygiene programme included chemistry, hygiene and physiology. Pages 3–4 and 7 further document graduates and diploma recipients, reflecting Fort Hare's role in academic and professional training across the humanities, natural sciences, education, theology and agriculture. As a primary historical source, the programme provides valuable evidence of Fort Hare's educational history, its relationship with Rhodes University, and the academic achievements of its graduates during the apartheid era. It supports institutional, biographical and genealogical research, as well as broader studies of Black South African higher education, curriculum development and the history of African scholarship.
