Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held at the Grahamstown City Hall on 2 April 1954, recognising the academic achievements of students who completed their qualifications during the 1953 academic year. The ten-page programme identifies the university's Chancellor, B. F. J. Schonland, Vice-Chancellor T. Alty and Registrar A. E. Shields, and outlines the ceremony's proceedings, including an address by the Right Reverend A. H. Cullen, Lord Bishop of Grahamstown, who was also presented with an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree. The document lists graduates across the Faculties of Arts, Science, Commerce, Social Science, Music, Divinity and Law, covering undergraduate, honours, master's and doctoral qualifications. It records distinctions in disciplines including English, history, psychology, economics, chemistry, physics, zoology, entomology, fine arts and theology. Of particular scholarly interest are the postgraduate research topics documented on pages 6–8, including studies of the geographical evolution of the Lower Sundays River Valley, the ecology of the Kleinmond River estuary, chemical conductivity, insect behaviour, South African soils and the rehabilitation value of sub-economic housing in Port Elizabeth. The programme also records doctoral research on tick resistance to chemical insecticides, alongside master's research addressing South African food production and consumption between 1929 and 1949. Page 9 documents diplomas in education, leather science, personnel welfare and management, social work and music, while page 10 lists scholarships, bursaries, fellowships and academic prizes awarded for work completed during 1953. As a primary historical source, the programme provides valuable evidence of Rhodes University's institutional development, academic priorities, research activities and student achievements in the early 1950s. It supports institutional, biographical and genealogical research, as well as broader investigations into the history of higher education and scholarly disciplines in South Africa
