Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the graduation ceremony of Rhodes University, held at the University College of Fort Hare on 17 April 1953. The two-page programme outlines the formal proceedings, including the academic procession, the constitution of the congregation by the Vice-Chancellor, prayers led by the Reverend Dr A. G. Rooks, the conferral of degrees, and an address by T. W. L. MacDermot. The document lists graduates of the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Science (Honours) and Bachelor of Science (Hygiene) programmes, reflecting the academic activities of Fort Hare during the early 1950s. A range of diplomas and certificates awarded in 1952 is also documented, including University Education Diplomas, an Advanced Diploma in Agriculture, a Certificate in Theology and College Matriculation in Theology. The lists distinguish between graduands attending the ceremony and those graduating in absentia, providing details of individual academic achievements. The programme offers valuable primary-source evidence of Fort Hare's educational provision, its contribution to the training of graduates and professionals, and its relationship with Rhodes University during this period. It also documents the historical role of teacher education, agricultural training, scientific studies and theological education within the institution's academic programmes. As a digitised historical record, the document supports institutional, biographical and genealogical research, as well as broader investigations into the history of higher education in South Africa during the apartheid era.
