Abstract
This digitised archival document records Rhodes University's graduation ceremony held at the Grahamstown City Hall on 27 March 1953, celebrating the academic achievements of students who completed their qualifications during the 1952 academic year. The eight-page programme identifies the university's Chancellor, B. F. J. Schonland, Vice-Chancellor T. Alty and Registrar A. E. Shields, and outlines the formal proceedings, including the presentation of graduates, the awarding of diplomas and the conferment of honorary Doctor of Laws degrees on Sir Ernest Oppenheimer and Hugh Le May. Graduates are listed across the Faculties of Arts, Science, Commerce, Divinity, Social Science and Music, with undergraduate, honours, master's and doctoral qualifications represented. The programme documents distinctions in disciplines including English, history, social anthropology, psychology, chemistry, zoology, mathematics, economics, philosophy and music. Of particular scholarly interest are the postgraduate research topics recorded on page 6, including Antonio Jorge da Silva Barbosa's study of cotton pests in Mozambique, Maurice Temple Friend's research on chromium complexes, Joseph William King's investigation of the response of pure organic crystals to ionising radiation, and Albert Bruce Martin Forsdick's study of traders in the Keiskama Hoek district and their role in the economy of a Native Reserve. The programme also records David Gerhardus Roux's doctoral research on the chemistry of wattle tannins across several Acacia species. Further sections document education and music diplomas, as well as the scholarships, bursaries, fellowships and prizes awarded for work completed during 1952. This primary-source record provides valuable evidence of Rhodes University's academic development, research priorities, institutional traditions and scholarly achievements in the early 1950s. It supports institutional, biographical and genealogical research, as well as studies of the history of higher education and scientific scholarship in South Africa.
