Abstract
This digitised archival document records the graduation ceremony of Rhodes University, held at the South African Native College, Fort Hare, on 25 April 1952. The four-page programme outlines the order of proceedings, including the academic procession, prayers, the conferral of degrees, an address by Professor A. R. Radcliffe-Brown, and the presentation of graduands by representatives of the Faculties of Arts and Science. The document lists graduates of the South African Native College across the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Science (Hygiene) programmes. The Bachelor of Arts graduates specialised in disciplines including history, English, geography, Xhosa, Southern Sotho, Tswana, social anthropology, psychology, systematic theology and Native Administration. Science graduates pursued combinations of chemistry, zoology, botany, geography, mathematics and physics, while the hygiene qualification included studies in physiology and hygiene. The programme records distinctions in chemistry and zoology and identifies graduands attending the ceremony as well as those graduating in absentia. Of particular historical significance is the document's record of the academic achievements of students at Fort Hare during the early 1950s, reflecting the institution's contribution to higher education and professional development in South Africa. The inclusion of African languages, social sciences, the natural sciences and public administration illustrates the breadth of academic training represented in the graduating cohort. As a primary historical source, this programme supports research into the institutional history of Fort Hare, the development of higher education for Black South Africans under segregation, and the biographical and genealogical histories of its graduates.
