Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Special Graduation Ceremony of the University of South Africa, held in Grahamstown on 29 April 1950, at which Rhodes University College presented its graduands for the 1949 academic year. The five-page programme identifies the university's senior leadership, outlines the ceremony's proceedings and lists graduates across the Faculties of Arts, Social Science, Science, Commerce, Education, Law and Divinity. It documents undergraduate, honours, master's and doctoral qualifications, including distinctions in disciplines such as history, psychology, English, chemistry, zoology, physics and sociology. The programme also records specialist qualifications in Fine Arts, Music, Public Administration and Social Work, reflecting the breadth of academic and professional training offered at the time. Of particular historical interest are two Doctor of Divinity theses: William Cosser's study of the distinctiveness of the wisdom literature of the Old Testament, and Daniel Horton Marlais Davies's history of the English Free Churches, examining their contributions to personal religion, ecclesiastical government, liturgics, education and social reform.
