Abstract
-
This digitised programme documents the Special Graduation Ceremony of the University of South Africa, held in Grahamstown on 30 April 1949, at which Rhodes University College presented its graduands for the 1948 academic year. The five-page historical record outlines the order of proceedings, identifies the university's senior leadership and lists graduates across the Faculties of Arts, Social Science, Science, Commerce, Education and Law. It documents undergraduate, honours, master's and doctoral qualifications, including distinctions awarded in several academic disciplines. The programme records doctoral research on the mineralogy and petrology of Southern Africa, and on local government finance in South Africa, reflecting the breadth of scientific and socioeconomic research undertaken at the time. It also identifies graduates by their attendance status and notes affiliations with other higher education institutions.
