Abstract
-
This digitised programme documents the Special Graduation Ceremony of the University of South Africa, held in Grahamstown on 1 May 1948, at which Rhodes University College presented its graduands for the 1947 academic year. The five-page historical document outlines the ceremony's proceedings and identifies graduates across the Faculties of Arts, Social Science, Science, Commerce, Education and Law. It records qualifications ranging from undergraduate and honours degrees to master's and doctoral degrees, including distinctions awarded in selected disciplines. The programme also documents doctoral research topics, including studies in German literature, upper-atmospheric conditions derived from radio measurements, and the chromite structures of the Bushveld igneous complex. In addition, it records the award of an honorary Doctor of Literature degree to Francis Carey Slater.
