In foreground is Bitou, Chrysanthemoides monolifera, burnt a few days before, its dried leaves still attached. This same area was burnt out in 1986, twelve years ago but had recovered well.

Only remainder of much larger Parson's Vlei at Bridgemead, Port Elizabeth, after exceptional winter rains Original vlei drained by P.E. Municipality. Already 2 dabchicks, 2 Egyptian Geese & 2 yellowbiled duck were at the vlei which had been dry for years.

Open space between factories at Perseverence Factory Site near Redhouse, Port Elizabeth At least 9 plants of Ammocharis coranica in hard ground. Others nearby out of this photo. This helps record the status of the species in an area rapidly being covered by factory buildings.

Open stretch of grassveld between Sherwood & Kunene Park, western suburbs, Port Elizabeth On this veld & a little more to the right out of the picture Gladiolus maculatus flowered in unbelievable profusion in November 1990, a last example of what the Port Elizabeth sandveld was like in the 1920;s before urban development and the gross spread of Australian Wattles exterminated the aandbloms. Townspeople used to gather large armfuls of the flowers for their homes, enjoying the scent given off in the evenings.
